4 0 SEPTEMBER 2010 BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS
A bright painting
propped against the wall
behind an antique side
table keeps the master
bedroom from looking
too sweet. “It makes a
statement,” Kevin says.
The light and airy
scheme continues into
the bathroom,

Design Lessons
Kevin Spearman, principal of Bellacasa Design Associates in
Houston, sheds light on how he gave his Minnesota home
interest—and how you can apply it to your home.
ACCESSORIES
“ Keep it real—flowers, books, a bowl of
fruit, a soft throw,” Kevin says. “There's no need to go out
and buy a bunch of knickknacks.”
CONTRAST
'The biggest mistake is to match everything,”
Kevin says. “When in doubt, always contradict. It gives a
house an edge and makes rooms more dynamic.”
PERSONALITY
In every room, do something unexpected-
adding one-of-a-kind finds such as the rusty old lanterns on
the mantel, for example. “ I like things you have to find—
not just things you can go out and get,” Kevin says.
